Haiku poems were created in Japenese culture centuries ago.  Haiku poems have rules that you need to follow about how many lines the poem can be, and how many syllables are in each line.  The style of haiku poem that we learn has 3 lines. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, and the third line has 5 syllables.  Here are some examples.

Haiku Poems

Three lines - 5 syllables

                       7 syllables

                       5 syllables

*A syllable is a sound or 'beat' inside of a word as you say it out loud.

For example the word 'haiku' has 2 syllables: hai-ku

The word 'poetry' has 3 syllables: po-e-try

Examples of haiku poems:

Science teaches us

About the world around us

Questioning all day

Sci-ence teach-es us                  (5 syllables)

A-bout the world a-round us     (7 syllables)

Ques-tion-ing all day                  (5 syllables)

Wagging back and forth

So happy just to see you

Playing fetch with sticks

No school! Summertime!

Run in the sun! Play outside!

Sleep in until noon!
